How Much Does A Wind Turbine Cost?

Although they were first introduced about 100 years ago, wind turbines with the specific purpose of generating electricity continue to get better in terms of effectiveness and versatility. Perhaps more importantly, their cost has steadily decreased. There are a few different basic varieties of wind turbine, each designed with a particular situation in mind.

Since they were introduced around 80 years ago, large-scale commercial wind generators have made serious strides. Among these advancements are superior blade design (which itself is mostly thanks to newly available materials), greater efficiency, and greater reliability. In order to handle high winds consistently and thus generate a large amount of power, these turbines are usually made from especially heavy materials.

Since the highest and most consistent winds are mostly in remote areas like shorelines, large-model wind turbines usually need to be located in these areas. Being “out of the way” like this means that it would be inefficient to have to repair them all the time, so it’s important that these types of wind turbines are built to last. Large-scale turbines are the most expensive of all modern wind turbines, usually starting at about $25,000, and often exceeding $100,000.

Wind turbines for residential use have become more popular in recent years. Residential areas, due to the presence of buildings and other obstacles, usually see regular shifts in wind patterns, and this was a tricky problem for early residential-use turbines to solve.

Most early residential-use wind turbines were too heavy to be considered for many locations. They would almost always need special support structures, and they could only really generate much power from very high winds. Ultimately, the drawbacks and costs were usually too much for many homeowners to really consider.

The most recent type of residential-use turbine to be introduced is called the micro turbine. The main enhancement introduced by these units is their capacity to generate energy from lower winds, which allows them to be used even when they’re not mounted on towers. There are some micro turbines available now that can be set up on the roof of a house. Even though small models like these don’t output the same amount of power as commerical turbines, they make up for it by working at all times. Starting around $600, these models are much more affordable than larger ones, but will still produce enough power to provide huge savings on electrical bills over the long term

The price of a wind turbine usually depends upon factors like size and capacity. It’s possible to reduce the cost even further by building your own wind turbine. All you need are some common tools and the right instructions, and just about anyone can build a wind turbine, and get the permanent savings that come with it.
