Is it possible to get an AC motor to generate if it is being driven by a coupled DC motor with DC VSD?
I have a system which consists of a DC shunt motor mechanically coupled to an AC 3 phase induction motor, the DC motor is connected to a Variable Speed Drive and the AC motor is connected directly on line to the grid. Is it possible to rotate the AC motor past its rated speed by using the DC motor and generate back to the grid?
As far as the AC induction motor is concerned you can do this without any technical problem, other than perhaps overloading your grid connection. The motor will run at a speed slightly higher than synchronous and it can only generate on to a fixed frequency supply (grid) - which is what you are proposing! To avoid synchronising problems you can start it as a motor and gradually proceed to drive and load it.
You may have a problem in that your utility might not accept power input without at least advance information and whether you can be remunerated for this power or offset it against your own consumption are certainly matters that must be clarified in advance.
