I agree that we should be doing more to help those in our own country that have suffered, but I don't know why it would "vex" you that people who have just suffered a devastating blow are desperate for help. Those countries are typically going through a SUDDEN tragedy - it's not a case of them needing money to so they can fix their economic recession. It's emergency response meant to save lives when a country has collapsed to the point where they don't have the resources. These are the kind of things that leave a nation of people without clean water, supplies, or a safe place to go. While the people in the US suffer, most of us still have at least one of those. I don't see how caring about others has some sort of political boundary. Surely there are times when you're having a bad day but are still willing to help others. Because you know that if you waited until your life was perfect before reaching out to others, you could never help.
Which isn't to denounce the suffering of Americans. We've been through tough times as well recently, and we too should pull together and offer to help one another. Not just ourselves, not just our own families, not just our own people but everyone.
