PEX Plumbing Component 7, Specialty Fittings
This is part seven in my Pex plumbing information series. I have finally completed a lot more analysis and can tackle some of the much more specialized fittings discovered in Pex plumbing.
SharkBite Fittings: These are produced by Money-Acme and use a "push - fit" connection technique and can be used for potable ( consuming ) h2o systems and Hydronic heating systems. Connections are easy and
manufactured by pushing the pipe into the connector with a twisting action until eventually it clicks. A specialized tool is required for disassembling the connection, but this is also a fast and straightforward operation. The connection has a stainless steel grab ring with teeth that open out and grab onto the inserted tube. SharkBite fittings are approved for behind wall and underground applications. All I can say relating to this is that if I had it in my house I would substitute it. With that in brain, I do not use the Pex to Polybutlyene connectors.

Can you recharge a refrigerator?
We have a Whirlpool side-by-side refrigerator that's about 10 years old, and I don't think it's cooling very well anymore. The coils are perfectly clean. The compressor housing is quite warm (almost too hot to touch), and the coils are barely warm at all. The fans are running without any blockages. It's a R-134a system, but there aren't any fittings on the lines. They're just crimped copper lines with rubber dust caps. My question is whether an A/C or appliance tech would be able to hook up to these and recharge it with R-134a? A price estimate for this would also be greatly appreciated.
When the defrost runs, several cups of water do drip out into the pan over about 10-15 minutes, so the defrost appears to be working. Air is blowing out the ice-maker vent in good quantity. And yes, I would have a tech work on it instead of myself.
They can use a tap-a-line valve to check / charge the system, although a lot of guys don't like to use them for fear that they'll leak in the future.
Chances are that it's not the refrigerant charge anyway. I'd want to know if it's defrosting properly,....if not, that can certainly cause your problem.
I'd guess you'd be in for a minimum of $150 or so, and it'd only go up from there.
Edit: I'm still leaning towards a defrost problem. if you're getting water during a defrost cycle, that's a good sign that it's defrosting, but it could still be one of two heaters defrosting part of the coil, leaving ice around the other heater, still blocking airflow. If it's making enough ice to give you water when it defrosts, it stands to reason that the refrigeration cycle must be working somewhat.
While I'd have to concede that it may be low on refrigerant, I'm still not convinced...besides, if it's low....where did it go???? If it's low, the leak would have to be found and repaired or you'll just run into the same problem again. Not too may folks nowadays are willing to leak check and repair a refrigerator.
