10 Things to Know If Your Home Has a Septic Tank System
Most people dont give much thought to what happens to the stuff going down the drain or washing away when they flush the toilet. Homeowners and tenants will go decades without having any problems with their public waste system and rarely find themselves concerned about where it ends up. Those whose homes are served by a septic system will need to take special precautions to properly maintain the system.
Designed with a holding tank and a network of leach lines, each septic tank system allows solid waste to decompose in the tank and clear liquids to absorb back into the ground through a network of pipes with holes in them. Anaerobic bacteria, bacteria that does not require air, is used to break down the solid waste material. It is a simple description but, enough for this topic discussion. An example would be in Minnesota where Akeley septic tank pumping companies are covering large areas due to the openess of the land where there is not a public sewer system available. Typically every 2 to 5 years, the waste must be pumped out.
Here are a few ideas that will help keep your septic system working as it was designed to:
- Remember where your septic system is located, particularly the access lid and leach line system.
- Allow the access lid plenty of room by avoiding any major landscaping nearby that might obstruct the lid or leach lines. Roots will grow toward the water source and eventually block or destroy the pipes.
- To prevent soil erosion and evaporation of the moisture you can plant grass over this area. Automatic sprinklers should not be installed near the leach field.
- To avoid collapse of the lines just avoid driving vehicles or heavy equipment over the leach lines.
- Conserve on water flowing into the system. To avoid wasting water by waiting for it to get hot enough for washing dishes or taking a shower, use water recirculator.
- Spread out laundry loads throughout the week. Dont wash them all on one day to avoid overflowing the system.
- Garbage disposals often put more solid waste into the septic system thus increasing the frequency of septic tank pumping. Consider composting organic kitchen matter.
- Putting things like tampons, grease, coffee grounds, cigarette buts and paper towels down your drain or toilet is not advisable. A waste basket is something the toilet isnt.
- Paint, oil, gasoline, weed killer, insect killer, and other toxic chemicals need to be disposed of properly in a manner that is appropriate, and don't dispose of them through your septic system. Toxic chemicals could damage the system by killing the anaerobic bacteria inside as well as contaminate the ground water pumped up by wells. If you are unsure of where to dispose of these materials, contact your local government or fire department and ask about hazardous material disposal.
- It is time to contact a licensed septic system contractor to evaluate the problem and offer a solution if you smell a foul odor in or around your home or above the leach lines.
You can protect your septic system while keeping it flowing and safe by just implementing these basic tips. Remember, if you ever need to call a professional Pequot Lakes sewer line cleaning service or Walker MN porta potty rentals, in the event of an emergency repair, you can usually find one in the yellow pages or on the web that can assist you.
If I have a 80ft^3 tank of air compressed to 3000psi, consuming it at 50psi & 40cfm, how long will tank last?
How many minutes will the tanks air last?
80cu ft. * 3000psi/50psi = 4800 cu. ft at 50 psi.
So, 4800cu. ft/40cfm = 120 minutes.
But, you have to have at least 50psi in the tank to be drawing it out at 50psi, so the actual available volume will be 80 cu. ft less than that, so 4720. So, 118 minutes.
