Strategic Change Management and the Importance of the First Five Percent

In my other blog I mentioned the "First Five Percent.â Thatâs my approach to strategic change management that says the quality of the first five percent determines what happens in the rest of the process.

I was in Los Angeles last week, working with a large association, on a strategic plan for their organization. It was the start of a year-long process to build a high-performing organization. One of the practices of the First Five Percent is to allow as many persons to participate as early as possible.. You never know who may have an excellent idea. Bringing many participants as early as possible, the faster you can get excellent minds and the undescovered talents..

There were 300 people in the room, including local officers, chapter leaders, and board members. The plan was not rigid.. I was prepared to go in different directions, depending on the first exercise, to assure high levels of participation. The first question I asked was: "Think about two years down the road and where you want the association to be. Present to me definite results you want and your yardstick of achievement..â

They worked on this question for 60 minutes and wrote down their responses on flip chart paper. Every cluster made an announcement right away.. I then asked them: âWhat did you hear yourselves say? DId you have meting of minds??â

Everyone called out what they heard. Step up memebership recruitment.Augment our positions.Make a new product.." Their energy were brimming.".

How does one gauge success.?I enquired. They repeated in a loud voice what was said to them.. I listed four specific measures to rate success. I called upon the group if they are one in mind.. Everyone raised their hands.

They took a break for lunch. While the room was quiet, I thought about my next move. I looked over all of their reports, and decided I should simply tap into their energy. I listed 12 goals on flip chart paper. Each goal came from them, like âDouble our membershipâ or âIncrease our political clout.â I posted these goals on the walls of the room. When they got back from their lunch break, I said: "Now look around the room. These are your goals. Find the goal you feel most passionate for. Go stand by that goal. There are blank pieces of paper for those who are passionate about some other goal.â

The group divided itself into teams around each goal. I told each team to come up master plan for each goal and then make a presentation.. While the reporting is in progress, I made remarks about major points to be settled and expedited an exchange of ideas for each.. If someone drifted off topic, I employed the two-minute rule ("Anything important can be said in two minutes") and they got back on course. We ended at 4 pm..m.

I asked them to explain what they liked about the meeting. âIt was energizing,â someone said. "Good ideas! Many people commneted. " Your direction," a personnel said. The two minute standard!" a few shouted. "We are delighted to be making our organization," a woman exclaimed..

"And what change would you like to see?â I asked.

So we have to go away!â a man shouted. There was laughter everywhere..

Advice for process for moving up from 10 to 8 gauge earring?

I am trying to move up from 10 to an 8 and I was wanting some advice on the process of doing this. Should I use some kind of moisturizer or something? I was wondering because I had a tattoo artist I know told me that I should get a pro to help me make that jump because it hurts more than going from 14 to 12 for example.

You can definitely do it yourself. I use lotion when bumping up to a bigger gauge, and try and get tapered gauges. Going from a 10g to an 8g isn't so bad for ears, it's not very painful. If this is a different type of piercing it may hurt more and be more difficult. When I gauged my septum up to an 8g it hurt a lot :(
