My onan 6500 generator makes a loud screeching sound when I start it. It stops after I restart it 3-4 times.?
The generator powers my house. The sound sounds like metal on metal almost like a fan brushing against something. I asked the nearest dealer and he said I would have to bring it in, but that would be a huge pain. I have taken the outer housing off but found no indication of what the ??!! is going on. The generator is a 1999 I believe.

The generator is a 1999 I believe. The screeching happens whether running or not for the first 3-5 times I start it, then it goes away after being run for a few seconds on the last time.
Does the screeching happen right when the engine fires off??? If so the problem might be the starter. The noise is caused a bad overrun clutch on the starter drive and will need to be replaced>
