The 5 Components Of The Lathe Machine

The lathe machine has five different components – the headstock; tailstock; cutting tools, such as the gouge, skew chisel, round chisel, narrower spear and the finishing utensils; carriage and spindle.

Lathes are tools that are utilized to shape or smooth wooden objects. This is the machine used by craftsmen and lathe operators to craft and and customize wood products. Lathes are useful for creating decorative wood designs; carving wood surfaces; creating furniture components like table and chair legs; and making cue sticks, baseball bats and other wooden items that are cylindrical in shape. If you work with glass or metal, you can get lathes for those jobs too. It is useful to know the different parts of the lathe machine in order to be able to operate it properly and to know when it needs spindle repair and other maintenance works.

The Headstock

The lathe machine’s headstock is responsible for anchoring and holding in place the upper end of the spindle. This is also the housing for the engine that spins the wood. The back of the headstock has a number of pulleys and gears which can be adjusted to alter the speed of the spindle’s rotation. A high-tension spring, or chuck, holds the wood piece in position preventing it from falling or moving once the spindle begins to rotate.

The Tailstock unit

The lathe machine, which has a centering mechanism that is attached to the wooden piece, is kept in a stationary position by the tailstock. There are two possibilities for the center: it can spin with the wood or can be immovable. The rotating mechanism or live center contains the bearings that enable it to move.

You will require cutting tools like the gouge, skew chisel, round chisel, narrow spear and also finishing tools

Different types of cutting tools on the lathe machine can be attached on the basis of project type undertaken. A gouging tool is widely utilized as an implement for removing excess wood. To perfect the details of a carving, one can use the skew chisel. Round chisels and more slender spears are utilized to create intricate details. To buff wood, use a finishing tool with a round end to minimize the amount of material that gets cut off.

The Carriage

The carriage holds the cutting tool of the lathe which makes it easy for craftsman to work. Five different components – namely the saddle, the compound rest, the apron, the cross-slide and the tool rest – make up the carriage. These components work together to allow the cutting tool to be slid into place.

Spindle mechanism

There is a trio of configurations for lathe spindles. All these three models are interconnecting and related. In the threaded model it is not easy to connect the chuck, and this model is very old one. There are cam studs at one side of the cam-lock spindles and it falls to the same kind of holes. The studs lock in place when a chuck key is turned. This third model has a small tip with a threaded collar and chuck key which is in-built.

The invention of the lathe machine has made the creation of wood products easier, faster and less physically demanding for the craftsman. Craftsmen are able to work accurately because they use lathe machines.
